This subject has been covered lots of times at TGB and there are many ways to attain the ripping and streaming of standard-definition DVD movies to Media Center and Extenders and to other secondary Media Center PC’s. For instructions on how to achieve that see this MS KB article. Now you will need to inform VMC where your DVD VOB documents are located? That is a common mistake to include a watch folder into the wrong section of VMC which is exactly what I did. DVD but nothing occurred and I possibly could not see my recently ripped DVD’s in the VMC DVD Library.

You actually don’t add the watch folder in the main Library Settings of VMC. Instead you will need to go into the VMC DVD Library itself, right click and choose from the menu to add Movies, and then add the location of your ripped DVD’s. See this guide for more information and some display screen shots. Ok so you now involve some of your DVD’s showing up in the VMC DVD Library. On my main VMC PC these play great using the default MS MPEG-2 decoder and because I ripped the entire disk I’ve the menus and further as well for the full DVD experience.

Well depending on what other Vista Media Center systems and extenders you have in your house you are able to do a few things to extend this to other devices and areas of your home. For instance in addition to our main VMC Personal computer we’ve a VMC laptop working Vista Ultimate also.

To have the same VMC DVD Library show up on that supplementary media center laptop all I needed to do was talk about out my DVD folder in Windows so it could be reached from the laptop. DVD. MCE01 is the name of our main VMC PC. Extenders are a completely different matter altogether and you cannot natively stream DVD VOB’s.

You have a few options here. What I did so was to use an application called VideoReDo to convert the VOB’s into a DVR-MS file. A DVR-MS file is a different container just, so it’s an extremely quick process of quick streaming the files directly into DVR-MS as there is no re-encoding.
